Oakland County, Michigan has 750 miles of gravel road and 19 graders to maintain it. Run every machine at once, and each operator still owns close to 40 miles of road. That’s before a single storm hits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now flip to Texas, where counties maintain more than half the state’s public road miles on a Lateral Road Fund that hasn’t been reformulated since 1954. Different climate, same problem: not enough iron to cover the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

This winter adds a wrinkle neither crew planned for. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is tracking a strong, possibly “super” El Ni\u00f1o moving into place for winter 2026\u201327, a hard reversal from last winter’s La Ni\u00f1a. That flips the map: warmer and drier across the northern tier, wetter across the South.
